CLUB LOYALTY: A DYING VIRTUE
Going by Sir Alex Ferguson’s recent press conference, the player who has been pampered at Old Trafford and hailed as the ‘White Pele’ and the ‘Next Bobby Charlton’ is all set to leave the club where he promised to stay for his entire career. The fact that he has questioned the club's ability to challenge for titles despite spearheading the team last year and almost winning the league and reaching the semi finals of the UCL if not for a few untimely mishaps shows his lack of conviction in a club which has loved him and a manager who has been instrumental in his career's success. The disappointing thing is the fact that players like Giggs, Scholes and Neville who put the club before themselves are a dying breed. During their prime, Giggs and Scholes were paid wages which was peanuts compared to what Ronaldo and Messi make today and yet stayed loyal to the club. Wayne Rooney looked all set to be in line with the old guard who have Manchester United in their heart. By choosing to leave United at a point when the side is in the process of filling the voids left by Ronaldo and Tevez, Rooney has betrayed his manager who was like a father to him and incurred the wrath of the Old Trafford faithful who chanted his name proudly last Saturday despite his crappy form, in his quest for more personal glory.
THE SHOW WILL GO ON AT OLD TRAFFORD
If Rooney leaves, Manchester United will lose their crown jewel and will face a mighty task in picking themselves up and challenging for the title, especially if Wazza leaves to Eastlands. But this is the club which is the definition of resurrection after pitfalls, which United have achieved repeatedly over the past 50 years. This is where the spirit of the club is valued more than any player. And this spirit will be the driving force for United. Wayne Rooney excluded himself from the club’s tradition by disrespecting that spirit and putting more value on personal glory. Rooney or no Rooney, the show will go on at Old Trafford!
